In the second year of my studies at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts the subject was that of portraits. As a consequence, on 25  October these pictures were taken of guests at the ‘Niere’, a restaurant in Clara-Zeltkin-Park, in front of the entrance. A fellow student and I had set up a mobile studio for the purpose. It comprised a tarpaulin secured to a card stand. The pictures were taken with my Linhof Technika (constructed in 1926) on 6/9 cm roll film. Our inspiration was Richard Avedon’s book “In the American West”. The cheerful serenity on the faces of the Leipzigers still moves me to this day. It was the time after the peaceful demonstration of 9 October and before the opening of the Wall on 9 November.
