Munich . rapids on the Isar

On one of my favourite walks along the river Isar I discovered this couple on a trolley (used by boatsmen to traverse the rapids). These two real people in an apparently unreal situation: how and what are they thinking about what could be a long common journey? And where was the path to lead them? Two people in the sunshine and silence in an enchanted place; unreal, on a journey to Nirvana – these tracks in nature travel only a short distance. I was fascinated by this image; it was genuine, simple and yet so unreal and absurd. Like a scene from a film that cannot be banished from one’s thoughts. (Yes, with hindsight, this image had an additional symbolic significance, in the mirror of the “big bang” of 1989).
